Pilot. Adventurer. Explorer.

John Sheppard is all these things. A lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force, he also happens to be the military commander of Atlantis, humanity's first intergalactic base. Like a lot of other things in his life, he came to it by chance; a rare genetic quirk and fancy flying impressed the right people to get him into the Air Force's top-secret Stargate interstellar exploration program.

Sheppard is the black-sheep son of a utilities mogul and never wanted anything more than to fly. But he's never been known for following the rules. He's been divorced, disowned by his family, and when the Stargate Program gave him a second chance, he'd been banished to Antarctica for one insubordination too many.

Charming, friendly, and open -- to an extent -- Sheppard's got an easy charisma that's useful in an explorer. He makes friends and allies for Atlantis easily, though he's intensely private at times. He's proven himself a determined and loyal leader, and lives by the motto 'no man left behind'. He's a skilled soldier and an innovative tactician. He's also a hell of a pilot.

Sheppard is in his mid-30s. He stands 6' tall, and has hazel eyes. His build is lean and wiry, verging on too thin. He's got an officer's confidence in his stance and stride, and he usually wears the black shirt and gray pants and jacket of the Atlantis military uniform. He's always got a bracelet or sweatband on his right wrist, and he's almost always got his handgun with him. He usually looks like he just rolled out of bed, with perpetual stubble and a mop of ungovernable dark brown hair.
